I’m always advocating selfishness here on The Bitch Blog. Sometimes I get shit for it but I believe that you should treat yourself as well as you would anyone else. Should you be spending your kids’ lunch money on manicures and stilettos? Absolutely not. But in all the things you do fit in your schedule every day, not forget about yourself.
I’m not immune to forgetting about taking care of myself either. I am a complete workaholic. Partly because I love what I do and it really is fun for me. I’m although I am a complete Bitch but I tend to fall into the nurturer role. (Tough love, of course) I’m the girl that you call when you need a little mothering or kick in the ass. And sometimes, I find that I do more to make other people feel good than for myself.
Erika Napoletano, the deliciously bitchy voice behind Redhead Writing weekly Bitch Slaps, recently wrote an inspiring post on Talk Thirty to Me called Girl: Rediscovered. She talks about losing her own style and the “feel good things” that go along with it.
There are a gazillion things that make us feel good, but when we lose sight of them, shit just rolls downhill. Looking good is one of those feel good things, right? Gawd, when was the last time I actually dolled-up and looked beyond “presentable?” Enough already.
That really got to me. So you know what I did yesterday? I got my hair done. I stopped pretending raggedy was a style (Yeah, I know I wasn’t fooling anyone) and I did something for ME. Then I took ME out to lunch. And then I bought ME some new shoes that I couldn’t wear anywhere but some place impractical. (Because every girl needs a few pair of impractical shoes.) And I didn’t do one work thing (which is why you didn’t get a Bitch Blog post yesterday.) And I didn’t answer any phone calls from anybody that would try to make “do” something. I just enjoyed myself. And while I look fan-fucking-tabulous but I feel even better.
When I define the modern day Bitch, she’s not the girl who sits in the corner and hopes for someone to notice what she needs or wants. She won’t be overlooked or ignored by anyone. . . including herself. So be good to yourself. Because how the hell do you expect anyone else to if you can’t?

several years ago i was a bitch, i took care of my needs and myself then the bitch faded away into being a mom and reliant on a man and i lost that bitch. my own mom mourned the bitch and i want to resurrect her but i have to be reminded to take care of me by outside sources. literally i took my best friend and my two kids to the store and i wasnt allowed to leave until i got something for myself other than a coffee so i spent $8 on makeup. i had bought new clothes in july and now am rarely wearing them since hubby and i dont get frequent enough date nights.
I love that you have a mom and a best friend who won't let you forget to be good to yourself. Hey, as long as you get a little "self-love" (get your mind out of the gutter!) in there at least once a week, I'm not mad at you!
